BYU-Idaho Horticulture and Floral Design Program
Cultivating the Future of Floral and Horticultural Industries
Brigham Young University-Idaho’s Horticulture and Floral Design programs offer a unique blend of academic rigor and hands-on experience, preparing students for successful careers in the horticulture and floral industries. With around 320 students, six dedicated faculty members, and a 93% post-graduation employment rate, these programs reflect the university's mission to develop disciples of Jesus Christ who are leaders in their homes, the Church, and their communities. The BYU-Idaho learning model, which emphasizes active learning, collaboration, and teaching one another, plays a central role in this success.
A hallmark of the Horticulture program is the real-world application of classroom knowledge. Students gain practical experience in projects and coursework designed to foster hands-on learning. One such experiential resource is the Thomas E. Ricks Gardens, a beautifully maintained 5 acre on-campus garden where students engage in landscape design, plant care, and garden management. This living laboratory not only enriches the academic experience but also serves as a resource for community engagement and environmental stewardship.
The university also offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Floral Design, aimed at preparing students for careers in the floral and events industry, or for entrepreneurial ventures. This program equips students with the skills needed to work at, manage, or own a floral business. Through a blend of theoretical learning and hands-on practice, students gain knowledge of the global floral industry and refine techniques in everyday, wedding, and funeral floral designs.
"Our goal is to prepare our students with the skills and flexibility to thrive in a wide range of careers," said a program faculty member. "The Floral Design Associates program teaches both the art and the business of floral design, ensuring that graduates are ready to contribute to and lead in this dynamic industry."
A highlight of the Floral Design program is the annual event hosted by the department to promote flowers as an art form. Held every other year in either the greenhouse or outdoor garden space, this event features large floral installations and smaller interpretive floral designs, inviting the entire campus community to experience the artistry of floral design. Sponsored by CalFlowers, the event serves as a major component of the curriculum for wedding and event planning students, who conceptualize, plan, and execute the entire experience. Each year's theme is uniquely proposed by students, making each event distinct in style and emotion. “CalFlowers is passionate about fostering the future of our industry by supporting emerging professionals,” says Monnaie Pepin, Director of Administration and Events at CalFlowers. The 2025 event will mark the fifth annual celebration of its kind.
The hands-on nature of BYU-Idaho’s Horticulture and Floral Design programs ensures that graduates are equipped with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to succeed in the floral, horticultural, and events industries. Whether in designing beautiful landscapes in the Thomas E. Ricks Gardens or creating stunning floral arrangements, students leave BYU-Idaho ready to make an impact.
