A Bright Outlook for 2025

A letter from CalFlowers Executive Director

2025 is off to a difficult start here in California, with historic wildfires raging through iconic Los Angeles neighborhoods and leaving a path of unprecedented destruction. Although floral production and logistics are largely unaffected by the wildfires, there are certainly floral businesses who operate in the affected zones that will need our support to get back on their feet after such a devastating natural disaster. CalFlowers looks forward to working with partner floral associations to provide whatever relief we and our members can muster.

On the bright side, both CalFlowers and That Flower Feeling Foundation are poised for a fantastic 2025. Building on numerous accomplishments and improvements during 2024, both entities are well positioned for further growth as we enter the new year.

CalFlowers Association enters 2025 with a spiffy new AMS (Association Management Software) platform, which provides immediate upgrades to our Association database management, member communications capabilities, website, and payment processing.  Our improved Fedex contract deepens shipping discounts by another 5%, funneling millions of freight dollar savings back into floral companies who utilize the program. We will be splitting our Membership Appreciation meeting into two, with a San Francisco and San Diego event planned for July/August including the popular “night at the ballpark”. We continue to strengthen the industry at large with ongoing and new financial supports for Life In Bloom, Memorial Day Flower Foundation, various research sponsorships, Sustainabloom, AFE scholarship fund, and a host of state-level programs ranging from education to training to in-person events. Additionally, the CalFlowers Board and staff are committed to a robust Strategic Planning retreat in 2025 to craft a vision for the years to come.

In 2024, That Flower Feeling experienced significant new levels of support from across the entire floral industry. Perhaps most notable was the formation of the TFF Advisory Board and its Committees. This new oversight structure continues CalFlowers’ promise to transition TFF governance to the industry at large and consists of some of the top minds in the world of floral. By carefully selecting directors and committee members from across all segments of floral, we’ve ensured proper representation of the many, diverse areas of interest of the industry. 2025 promises to see TFF’s next major creative launch, funded by the voluntary contributions of the industry itself which reached record levels in 2024. It’s a seminal moment in our ability to engage with the American consumer. Alongside the Test Market project currently being run in the state of Texas, and the Unit Sales Program which is placing branded TFF merchandise in the hands of floral retailers across the country, the Foundation will continue to elevate the importance of fresh flowers in the cultural zeitgeist of America, directly improving business conditions for all floral stakeholders.

Lastly, I’m both excited and a bit sad to share some personal news. My personal life journey is taking me in a new direction – to the amazing city of Amsterdam, Netherlands. I fell in love with Amsterdam and the entire country over the past 20 years of visiting and have decided to make it my home. As a result, I am leaving my position at CalFlowers and That Flower Feeling, effective March 31. I have tremendous appreciation for the CalFlowers Board of Directors, staff, and members. I have served CalFlowers for over 22 years now, starting with the Transportation Committee, the Board, and two terms as President of the Board before taking the Executive Director position in 2020. It is incredibly rewarding to work with an Association that is so broadly representative of our great industry and who consistently supports such a huge range of activities within it. Leveraging my passion and skillset to benefit the entire floral industry has been a dream come true, and I regret that time is coming to an end. Of course, the Netherlands is the global hub of floral trading, and I do expect to remain in the industry. To all my friends and colleagues around the world – whenever you pass through Amsterdam (and you will!), please be sure to drop me a line so we can break bread, commiserate over challenges, and get excited about opportunities. It is truly a gift to be part of the global fresh flower community, and I can’t wait to see you all in the ‘Dam!

- Steve Dionne

Florabundance Flowers and Warehouse Featured in Netflix Series ‘With Love, Meghan’

California-based Florabundance is delighted that their flowers and warehouse will be showcased in Season 1 of 'With Love, Meghan', a Netflix series starring Meghan Markle. However, considering the challenging circumstances in the state and the shared commitment to supporting recovery efforts, Netflix has chosen to postpone the project launch. With Netflix's full support and at Meghan's request (California is her home state), the release date has been rescheduled to March 4, instead of January 15.

WUMFA 2025 Convention Update:

A Letter from Convention Chair Spencer Whitehouse-Seim

We’re in the thick of it again, my dear fellow florists. It begins as corsage orders for Homecoming. Then, as soon as you’re back in the groove, you get hit by Thanksgiving centerpieces. And then who-knows-what: poinsettias, wreathes, gifts, garlands, arrangements for all manner of Winter holidays. Through all of that, the calls and emails about pre-orders for Valentine’s Day. And just when you think you can take a breather, you get a call on February 16th asking about an arrangement for Mother’s Day!

In all the behind-the-scenes hassle, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the feeling that we don’t have enough time. As florists, our pride is making it look like it took no time at all - making it look like we didn’t spend hours scrolling websites and calling wholesalers and muttering about what we’d do to a stem if it didn’t cooperate. It can be hard to find time to refresh ourselves and get back in the swing of things after such a hectic ending to the year.

Transportation Updates

FedEx Updates & Service Disruptions:

Our new rates for 2025 are now in effect. The General Rate Increase (GRI) that FedEx enacted for 2025 was 5.9%. Our contract, however, holds the line at 5% so members will feel some relief this coming year. New rates are now viewable in your FedEx account and we will have hard copies available the week of January 13th which can be found on our website.

FedEx Demand (Peak) season surcharges are still active and will run through January 19th. If you missed the email, you can click HERE for complete details from FedEx.

Now that winter is here, it is a good practice to always check for any service delays or alerts before shipping. Knowing to what to expect before you ship can limit any unexpected delays and headaches.

FedEx International Shipping:

See here for an excellent resource from FedEx that walks shippers through the process step by step. First time international shippers inherently have questions on process and paperwork required. If you would like to talk to someone in person whether on the phone or at FedEx office, professional assistance available.

Additional FedEx Support & Resources:

  • For those wanting to know who your FedEx representative is, or if you want to be contacted by FedEx, please email Chris Johnson, your FedEx account number and he will respond with information on your FedEx contact. It’s a good practice to establish a relationship with your FedEx representative. They can be of great assistance when needed.

  • Call (877) 339-2774 for FedEx’s tech support team, who can help with many tech-related issues including guidance regarding on-line shipping platforms.
  • You can have your shipments held at your nearby FedEx Office instead of being delivered to your door. Having shipments held at your local FedEx office can help with temperature management since your boxes will be stored in a temperature-controlled office rather than riding in a truck all morning. It’s also true that you can drop off your shipments at your local FedEx office. This can be an advantage for some parts of the country where having your packages standing by in FedEx office is preferable to being in a truck for hours.

Surcharges & Claims Resources:

For those members looking for good general information on Surcharges and Claims, the following information can be helpful.

This first resource offers information regarding surcharges and fees. Keep in mind that the CalFlowers program offers members MANY surcharge and fee reductions that are significantly lower than these standard surcharges, however it’s still a good reference point and has some clear definitions on what each fee/surcharge is. If you would like a summary of your program surcharge/fee discounts and waivers, please check our website or email Chris Johnson for a copy.

The second resource is very helpful when you need to file a claim for damaged or lost product. Keep in mind, a product claim is different from our Money Back Guarantee, which applies to shipping charges and is handled differently. Product claims are more involved and can be confusing, but this resource helps navigate the process.

FedEx New Member Resources:

New members who are just starting with FedEx shipping can utilize the “Customer Training” service that is available upon request. This service offers shippers direct one-on-one assistance from FedEx covering many of the questions new shippers may have. If you are interested in signing up, please contact Chris Johnson. Visit this webpage for excellent information for new shippers.

We would also like to remind members to stay current with their FedEx Express shipping invoices. FedEx payment terms are 15 days. All members shipping on FedEx Express are expected to stay within the FedEx payment terms. Failure to stay current with FedEx risks your account being delinked from the program. For more information on this issue, contact Chris Johnson.

To obtain your invoice details and payment options, please contact FedEx Customer Service.

GLS Updates & Transit Map:

Like FedEx, GLS also implemented surcharges during the busy Peak season, however for our account, member shippers will only see a $1/package charge for deliveries to Residential locations when shipping priority. The peak surcharge season runs through January 19th.

For 2025, GLS is implementing a 5.9% for their regular customers, CalFlowers members will only see a 3.5% increase. Updated rates are available now on our website

Check out this interactive Time and Transit map. Plug in your ZIP code and a handy map will show you your 1-day, 2-day transportation options.

GLS Ground Rates:

The CalFlowers GLS program is one of our popular, most value-priced offerings, with discounts well over 70% off standard rates. GLS offers later pick-ups and earlier deliveries while providing express door-to-door services covering CA, AZ, NV, OR, WA, NM, UT, and ID. To take advantage of this service, members must sign up in advance, which only takes a few minutes. For more details, please contact Chris Johnson at (760) 533-5580.

GLS Program Improvements:

  • GLS will now honor product claims. If GLS is at fault (acts of God, not included) and the product arrives damaged, significantly late, or just missing, members now can file a claim. We highly recommend member shippers to indicate the correct Declared Value to be covered.

  • GLS will credit 100% of shipping costs if your shipment is not delivered on the day promised. Bad weather is excluded. Members will need to request this within 48 hours at customerservice@gls-us.com
  • GLS has given our account access to a special premium team of Customer Service agentsThis high-level group was designed for fast response and problem solving. Please contact Chris Johnson for access to this important resource.
