Get to Know Louie Figone 🌸
Louie Figone, the owner of Figone Nursery in Half Moon Bay, CA, has a deep heritage in the flower industry. His roots trace back to San Bruno, CA, where his father transitioned from growing vegetable crops during WWII to cultivating cut flowers in 1949. Although Louie initially pursued automotive machine work in high school and community college, he remained involved in the family flower business.
In July 1967, Louie left the family business to start his own flower-growing venture on rented land. This bold move paid off when he purchased the land in 1970, the same year he got married. Figone Nursery initially focused on marguerite daisies, selling 20% at the SF Flower Market and 80% to local Bay Area shippers. By 1983, the nursery expanded to include mini carnations, stock, delphinium, larkspur, and alstroemeria. The pivotal moment came in 1997 when they began growing dahlias, leading to their current specialization. Today, Figone Nursery cultivates dahlias, ranunculus, callas, heather, and lavender on approximately 20 acres.
Louie has significantly contributed to the floriculture industry through his extensive service and leadership. He served on the San Mateo County Resource Conservation District for 23 years and was a Director of the NorCal Flower Growers and Shippers Association, where he also served as President for two years. Louie played a crucial role in expanding the association statewide, now known as CalFlowers, by collaborating with Executive Director Shiz Namba and engaging with Southern California growers.
Additionally, Louie served two years on the AFMC Board and is a past member of both SAF and WFFSA. His dedication has left a lasting impact on the floriculture community, and his legacy continues to thrive through Figone Nursery.
Thank you, Louie, for all that you've done and continue to do for the floral industry!
